Tamil Nadu Senior Men's State Championship 2020 - How it all unfolded in Karur?

Pugalur a small village in Karur district welcomed aspiring Kabaddi players from different districts from Tamil Nadu for the 67th Tamil Nadu Senior Men Championship to showcase their skills to find their place in the 12 that will represent Tamil Nadu in the senior nationals later this year in Jaipur. This tournament saw 29 teams out of the 32 teams turn up for the event, the 3 teams which did not make it was Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Nilgiris. The chief guest who kicked off proceedings was Mr. Anbalagan who is the Collector of Karur district. In his speech, he mentioned that Kabaddi is the pride of Tamil Nadu and one must embrace it and take the sport to the next level.

Salem emerged as the champions in this selection tournament, they remained unbeaten throughout out and in the final they got better of Cuddalore in a one-sided encounter with scores reading 39-16. Salem had four players in the likes of Elavarasan, Elangeshwaran, Kalaiarasan, and Mohan Raman who have played the Pro Kabaddi League which made them clear favorites to take the crown. Other players like Ajith Kumar from Tamil Thalaivas who was a local boy here at Karur, M Abishek from Jaipur Pink Panthers were all seen in action for their respective teams.

A special mention must go the crowd at Pugalur in Karur, who was coming in huge numbers to catch the Kabaddi action, even during the day when the weather was burning hot people were there to watch and cheer for the upcoming stars of Tamil Nadu. The organizer was forced to open the VIP seats to the general public as the gallery did not have any empty seats. The crowd showed great character and enthusiasm in showering their support to the players and all 3 days there was buzz and hardly any empty seats in the gallery or in the VIP area and when talking to some of the fans they highlighted the fact that Kabaddi tournaments for them is like a festival where they bring their families and have a ball of time.

The event was closed by the presence of Tamil Nadu's Electricity minister Mr. P Thangamani who was in awe by looking at the crowd being so passionate about Kabaddi and highlighted that the association must work towards getting the sport into Olympics.
